In 1505, Michelangelo was called to Rome by Julius II, who entrusted him with making his funeral monument. The project, resumed after the pope’s death and resized in 1516, came to an end only after another three decades of tormented events: the result is the statuary complex, with the famous statue of Moses sitting in the center, that we can still admire today in the church of San Pietro in Vincoli.

A masterpiece that never ceases to amaze after centuries and that always reserves new surprises: to reveal some of them is the video “The light of Michelangelo”, which the Ministry of Culture recently launched on its YouTube channel and on all social networks. Through a time-lapse technique, the film shows the surprising special effects created by Michelangelo using the movement of natural light on the sculptural group. During the spring equinox sunsets, to which the feast of Easter is linked, the sun’s rays pass through the windows of the façade and the narrow passage between the columns of the basilica’s nave, illuminating the work with a play of light that, minute by minute, theatrically lights up some fundamental elements of the sculptural group and strengthens its spiritual significance.
