If cities are living creatures, city squares are their beating hearts. Serving an important purpose as a social and commercial meeting place, they also reflect the urban identity, with its transformations and changes: it is therefore natural for them to welcome the innovations of the 4.0 technology industry. As part of the “Piazze Smart” project, at present in an experimental phase, Rome thus inaugurates its first smart square in the Pietralata district, a public place that respects high standards of environmental sustainability without forgetting people and the quality of life.

A modern and safe space, with new services accessible to all: free Wi-Fi, for example, but also three smart benches powered by solar energy and equipped with wireless charging, USB, radio, speakers. In the green area in via Cave di Pietralata it is also possible to recharge a smartphone by using three gym machines that convert the energy produced by physical activity into electricity. An interactive multimedia totem, called Gate 1, will provide information on weather, culture and current events: once fully operational, it will also provide first aid and video surveillance services. For the future, the project envisages a smart square in each Municipality of Rome.
