From Thursday 15 January 2026, a maximum speed limit of 30 km/h will apply throughout the Limited Traffic Zone (ZTL) in the Historic City Centre.
The Dipartimento Mobilità Sostenibile e Trasporti (Department for Sustainable Mobility and Transport) has signed and formally registered the administrative order establishing the 30 km/h Zone within the Historic Centre ZTL, implementing the resolution approved by the City Executive on 13 November 2025.
The entire Historic Centre ZTL area will be subject to the 30 km/h speed limit, including wider and higher-capacity streets. This measure forms part of an ongoing process to transform the Historic Centre into a space increasingly focused on pedestrian use, road safety and quality of life, moving away from an urban model designed primarily around motor vehicle traffic.
Lower speed limits are a fundamental measure to reduce both the number and severity of road accidents, narrow speed differences between road users and offer greater protection, particularly for pedestrians and cyclists, thereby contributing to a reduction in the risk of fatal injuries.
The first month will serve as a settling-in period, accompanied by the launch of a dedicated public communication campaign aimed at informing residents and raising awareness of the new rules governing the 30 km/h Zone. Speed indicator displays will also be installed at selected strategic locations across the area.
The Comando della Polizia Locale di Roma Capitale (Local Police Command) has arranged a strengthening of monitoring and enforcement activities within the 30 km/h Zones of the Historic Centre ZTL. Police patrols will carry out mobile checks to ensure compliance with the new speed limits and to support a gradual adjustment to the new rules.
Enforcement will be widespread and targeted, pursuing a dual objective: to counter unsafe driving behaviour and to promote greater awareness of road safety. Even where the use of speed detection devices is not possible, checks will still be conducted in full compliance with current regulations and the Highway Code.
