Center of Rome is UNESCO’s most popular World Heritage site according to Instagram

from 22 November 2021 to 31 December 2021

To celebrate its 75 birthday, UNESCO shared a hit parade of the most popular world heritage sites on social media. Today, the sites identified and protected by the UN agency are 1,154 and the country with the most designated sites is Italy with 59 sites, followed by China, Germany, France and Spain.

But which is the most famous one? To find it out, British creative resource company Design Bundles studied the number of times the sites have been tagged and immortalized on Instagram in 2021. Topping this special hit list is the historic center of Rome: with its 14 thousand square kilometers, it includes the entire surface of the 22 historic districts of the city and is in the World Heritage List since 1980.

Also thanks to unique monuments such as the Colosseum, the Pantheon and the Trevi Fountain, there are 61,244,436 posts on Instagram featuring the hashtags #Roma and #Rome. The podium is completed by Rio de Janeiro with 45 million photos or videos and by Venice and its lagoon with 25.7 million posts.
