Sport is not just about competition: it acts as a catalyst for development, innovation and growth in the local area. The strategy implemented by Roma Capitale in this regard has proved capable of attracting major international events, generating investment, enhancing infrastructure and boosting the city’s appeal to tourists and as a cultural destination.
The conference, which took place on 3 July in the Sala della Protomoteca in Piazza del Campidoglio, was the result of a collaboration between Roma Capitale and the Il Sole 24 ORE Group (and formed part of the Roma Smart Tourism - Azione 3 “Smart Events” project promoted by Roma Capitale with funding from the Ministry of Tourism). Institutions, sports federations, experts and representatives from the academic world have discussed the economic, social and urban benefits generated by major events, exploring strategies and prospects in greater depth. The findings of the study by the Il Sole 24 ORE Research Centre show that, from 2023 to 2026, Rome has consolidated its global standing by hosting top-tier events (such as the Ryder Cup, the BNL Italian Open tennis tournament, the Six Nations Rugby Championship and the European Athletics Championships), with an estimated economic impact of 7.5 billion euros.
