Risorgimento in Rome

The Capitoline Superintendency of Cultural Heritage, on the occasion of the commemorative events dedicated to the establishment of the Roman Republic and as part of a broader project of studies and interpretative re-readings on the birth and development of the Risorgimento, organizes a series of conferences entitled Risorgimento in Rome at the Capitoline Hill.

The lectures, curated by Miguel Gotor of the University of Rome Tor Vergata, aims to highlight the Risorgimento period by comparing it to subsequent eras. The Risorgimento coincides with the birth of the Italian nation and the founding of the unified state, constituting a pivotal moment in our history.

Indeed, it was in Rome that one of the most glorious pages of history was celebrated: the birth of the Roman Republic, established on February 9, 1849, and the approval of a Constitution that introduced universal male suffrage, the separation of powers, the freedom of citizens, and the abolition of the death penalty, ghettos, and torture for the first time in Italy. This, albeit briefly, realized a democratic dream. It was indeed a political, civil, and cultural project that, unfortunately, did not last long, but it undoubtedly represented an ideal model of struggle for the future generations.
