The Orchestra and Chorus of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, conducted by Sakari Oramo, present the Concert for two pianos by Francis Poulenc and the Choreographic Symphony Daphnis et Chloé by Maurice Ravel, with Stefano Bollani and Hyung-ki Joo at the piano, at the Auditorium Parco della Musica.
Dedicated to the Princess de Polignac, the Concert in D minor for two pianos (1932) is characterized by a compositional virtuosity and by Francis Poulenc's great ability to play with a wide horizon of stylistic and formal references. Presented at the Festival of the International Society of Contemporary Music in Venice in 1932 - with Francis Poulenc and Jacques Février on pianos - the concert soon became a repertoire piece.
Maurice Ravel's ballet Daphnis et Chloé in one act in three parts, described by the author as a choreographic symphony, was written for orchestra and chorus between 1909 and 1912 for Sergej Diaghilev's Ballets Russes and focuses on the bucolic love which blossoms between the goatherd Daphnis and the shepherd Chloe. The subject, adapted by Michel Fokine, is taken from the ancient Greek novel by Longo Sofista from the 2nd-3rd century AD. In the ballet the pastoral and lively atmosphere of the novel is maintained, in contradiction with the initial project which envisaged an antiquing musical layout, which however would have contrasted with the choreography.
With a monumental structure and rich in melodic suggestions, the work is considered one of Ravel's most successful works.
