Premio Roma Danza 2021 - 19th Edition

Premio Roma Danza 2021

The National Dance Academy presents the 19th Edition of the Premio Roma Danza. Born in 2001 under the patronage of the President of the Republic, the Premio Roma Danza soon became one of the most prestigious dance competitions on an international level.

Aimed at students of the National Academy of Dance and external competitors, it has taken place over the years in the spaces of the Teatro Grande of the National Dance Academy.

This year, like last year, despite the Covid-19 emergency, the Premio Roma Danza does not stop giving the proper visibility to new talents from all over the world engaged in the field of digital choreography.

The event, therefore, focuses on Video Dance and takes place in live streaming on the official Facebook and Youtube social channels of the National Dance Academy.

The Award is divided into different forms of communication:

  • Dance Movie: an original and unpublished work that must have dance in all its forms as its subject and can be made with any hardware or software for editing;
  • Published Dance Production: the video presented in this category must already be produced and published in the last three years (not earlier than 1 January 2018). The category includes: dance movies, dance animations, and documentaries aimed at spreading knowledge of the different aspects of society that use dance as an expressive medium;
  • SmARTphone Dance: short original and unpublished videos made exclusively through mobile phone and processed through smartphone video editing applications.

The attention of the event is expressly focused on interpretation, with the awareness that creativity can also be expressed "in other places and in other ways."

In this particular and intense historical moment, the prestigious Prize aims to stimulate the fundamental concept of interpretation and weave it on the different warps that new technologies offer us. The aim is to support talents in creation and composition, offering them the opportunity for valuable relationships between the world of production and that of the diffusion of dance in its possible forms.

The competition is divided into; preliminary stages, from 17 May to 14 June, semifinal, from 8 July to 10 July, and final, 11 July.

The announcement of the winners and the awards ceremony of Roma Danza 2021 - International Dance Competition - Video Dance Section, on the other hand, will be assigned on 12 July to the video that obtained the highest number of votes.

The videos selected for the semifinal phase will be visible on the institutional website of the National Dance Academy and on the official Facebook page of the National Dance Academy starting on 15 June.

All the semi-finalist videos selected by the artistic committee of the Roma Danza 2021 Award will be uploaded to a public platform from 8 July to allow the highest number of users to express their preference. The platform and voting methods will be indicated on the web page dedicated to the Premio Roma Danza on the official website of the National Academy of Dance.

Great news this year! A special prize, sponsored by the Municipality of Rome, was instituted. The Premio Roma Danza 2021- Premio Speciale Video Danza Roma Capitale promotes the image of the territory of the Capital and the Municipalities that actively participate in the management of applications and selection of films with their own commission.

This edition of the Roma Danza Award saw the participation of 150 video projects of which 30 from different countries of the world such as China, United States, Brazil, Kazakhstan, Czech Republic, France, Spain, Finland, Sweden, Mozambique and Syria. The video works will be selected by an internationally renowned jury chaired by Ana Laguna, dancer symbol of the major choreographers of the contemporary international scene, Mats Ek's companion and muse. The other members of the jury are: Robert Swinston, Director of Choreography of the Merce Cunninghman Trust, former assistant of Merce Cunningham and Artistic Director of the Center National de Danse Contemporaine (CNDC) in Angers, Kristian Ratevossian, dancer and teacher of Vaganova technique and then again Alfio Agostini, director of BALLET2000 and dance critic and the artist Cesare Pietroiusti, President of the Palaexpo Special Company and curator of the artistic programming of the Mattatoio.
