The Botanical Garden of Rome, the splendid Trastevere garden on the slopes of the Gianicolo, hosts the third edition of Ortidea, which celebrates Italy's immense and varied horticultural heritage.
If Era di Maggio, which just ended, declined the rose in all its varieties and colors, now the time has come to admire, gathered in the same place, the most beautiful and precious orchids, flowers of immense beauty, and a combination of colors and scents of the different plant species.
With its 12 hectares, the Botanical Garden presents, in addition to its unique and rare botanical collections, the colorful orchids, tillandsias, bromeliads, and kokedamas from the botanical gardens of Naples and Florence and from three of the most prestigious Italian sector associations such as A.I.O., A.O.C.I., and A.L.O., which this year is joined by that of the Dendrobium & Fuukiran Association, specialized in the Japanese orchid sector.
The most authoritative experts will help you get to know or get closer to this incredible flower also thanks to educational workshops for adults and children, exclusive guided tours inside the Accademia dei Lincei, and a real contest that will elect the most beautiful 'Goddess,' with the Orchidea Fashion Show, on Sunday 21st May. Proud orchid growers will bring their most prized specimens to show to all attendees. A Committee will select the most beautiful plant. The lucky owner will have his orchid immortalized by a professional photographer.
Space for good food and drink with dedicated corners to pamper your palate with fresh and mouthwatering proposals, ice creams, and treats for all tastes.
Among the scheduled appointments, all included in the ticket and bookable directly inside the Garden, do not miss the one dedicated to orchids' home cultivation with insights into the fundamental measures to make them grow at home, such as fertilization and repotting. A meeting is for the care of orchids with a space dedicated to the recovery of run-down plants, which, like in previous years, will help you understand how to remedy problems caused by excessive or scarce water or sun.
Space also for kokedama, suspended Japanese plants that grow with flying roots and without a pot and date back to the 1600s, but also for bonsai and carnivorous plants.
The event flagship is the prestigious exhibition of rare and precious orchids - set up in the large Serra Espositiva - which will exhibit the exquisite essential grace typical of the Rising Sun - with installations and exhibitions of species of great beauty.
And still don't miss the walks inside the rich collections of ferns, bamboo, and tropical plants, in the Japanese Garden and among the rows of Vigneto Italia, a real open-air encyclopedia of all the native varieties of Italian vines.
