From 25 May to 22 June, an urban tour brings Il barbiere di Siviglia to the heart of Rome's neighbourhoods
Operacamion is a travelling project of the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma that transforms a truck into a real mobile theatre.
The container opens like a theatre curtain and turns into a stage, bringing orchestra, singers, lights and costumes directly into the squares of Rome's municipalities.
The first stage is scheduled for Sunday 25 May in the Spinaceto district; to follow, eight more shows and, in the Autumn, a new production will involve all the other municipalities.
Operacamion is an unprecedented and festive way of experiencing opera, which merges with the spirit of the street and the energy of the neighbourhoods, to bring the great repertoire closer to everyone's daily life. Spectators - young and old - bring their chairs from home, gather in the square and become part of a collective ritual, where culture becomes accessible, convivial, popular.
Rossini's masterpiece is presented in a streamlined but complete version, with the Orchestra dell'Opera di Roma conducted by Carlo Donadio. The direction is by Manu Lalli, who also curates costumes and lighting, in a lively and immediate visual style, inspired by the imagery of the circus, the commedia dell'arte and the street.
The singing company is composed of young talents, many of whom are part of the ‘Fabbrica’ Young Artist Program of the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma: a concrete investment in new generations of artists.
The musical adaptation is by Tommaso Chieco and Marco Giustini, with scenes by Daniele Leone and mime movements by Chiara Casalbuoni.
The 2025 OperaCamion/Barbiere calendar involves nine municipalities, embracing a broad map of the city and its neighbourhoods, from the centre to the suburbs:
