OperaCamion - The Barber of Seville

A lorry that opens like a curtain and transforms into a stage complete with an orchestra, singers, lighting and costumes. OperaCamion is the travelling project of the Teatro dell’Opera - Rome Opera House (with the support of Roma Capitale, the Department of Culture, the Department of Major Events, Sport, Tourism and Fashion, and the Lazio Region) which brings opera to the squares, courtyards and spaces of the city and the metropolitan area in an accessible, convivial and popular atmosphere.

The 2026 edition of the project presents once again Gioachino Rossini’s “The Barber of Seville” to the public in a nimble, pop-inspired and modern version that nevertheless preserves the musical and theatrical richness of the original score. The production, directed by Manu Lalli, draws inspiration from historical forms of popular entertainment, such as the circus and the commedia dell’arte. On the mobile stage, illusionists, acrobats, animal trainers and clowns will interact with the square, involving the audience in the on-stage action. The cast features a troupe of young performers, some of whom come from the “Fabbrica” Young Artist Program of the Rome Opera House. The musical adaptation is by Tommaso Chieco and Marco Giustini, with set design by Daniele Leone and choreography of the mime movements by Chiara Casalbuoni. The Opera House Orchestra, conducted by Alessandro Poleggi, is positioned directly at the foot of or behind the truck. The sound is further enriched by the participation of local choirs and those from the host municipalities.

This year, the Quarticciolo district (inside the Magazzini del Teatro dell’Opera) has been chosen as the first stop on the travelling stage-truck’s urban journey, which will consist of nine further events, including in Bracciano and Valmontone. All performances start at 9.15 pm and last approximately 90 minutes. Admission is free while seats last.
