The Teatro dell'Opera di Roma opens its 2023-24 dance season with the traditional Christmas ballet, which returns to the stage in a new production with a choreographic reinterpretation by Canadian choreographer Paul Chalmer.
First performed in December 1892 at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, The Nutcracker is based on E.T.A. Hoffmann's famous tale, The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, and tells the story of Clara's dream during a Christmas Eve at the beginning of the 19th century.
Characters such as the Nutcracker Prince, the Sugarplum Fairy, little Clara, and the mysterious Drosselmeyer, together with toys, mice and soldiers, give life to an enchanting adventure against the backdrop of the set designed by Andrea Miglio and the lighting by Valerio Tiberi.
On stage, Maia Makhateli and Victor Caixeta, guest artists in the roles of the protagonists, together with the stars of the Corps de Ballet of the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, directed by Eleonora Abbagnato, dance, with costumes by the famous creative Gianluca Falaschi, to Pëtr Il’ič Čajkovskij's splendid notes, such as the Waltz of the Flowers, the Waltz of the Snowflakes and the Dance of the Sugarplum Fairy, performed by the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma Orchestra conducted by Nir Kabaretti.
