The long-awaited Japan Days return on October 18th and 19th at the Capannelle Hippodrome, a true festival with free admission, offering everyone an up-close and informal experience of Japanese culture and its many facets. This unique experience bridges the great tradition and elegance of classical Japan with the hyper-colorful vibe of the contemporary pop/nerd community.
The large Market Area is transformed into a theater of wonders featuring shows, showcases, workshops, talks, live cooking, activities for all ages, street food, and numerous guests. Over one hundred exhibitors present brightly colored objects and fabrics, ranging from traditional kimonos to the kawaii pop culture. In the Food Area, visitors can sample delicious onigiri, soba, sushi, and mochi, taking a unique journey through the aromas and flavors of authentic street food from the matsuri (traditional Japanese festivals). There's also a typical konbini minimarket with a corner inspired by Japanese neighborhood shops open 24 hours a day.
The festival also hosts several important workshops, such as the Introductory Course to the Japanese Language by the Fondazione Italia Giappone, the Kodekama Lab using traditional materials such as the ketotsuchi (clayey soil) and the akadama (clayey component), the origami workshop by Acero Rosso, an introductory course on the ancient Japanese art of paper folding to create symbolic and functional objects, the shodō course by the master Masami Adachi to learn the basics of Japanese calligraphy, the watoji Japanese bookbinding seminar, the kintsugi workshop (ancient art of ceramic repair), the Japanese mask workshop, the bonsai course, and many others.
The Percorsi Area presents the ancient art of tea preparation, where you can sample excellent matcha, and a Sake Class led by Shibataya Italy offers sake and other Japanese spirits. In the Wellness Area, you can enjoy shiatsu massages thanks to the professionalism of the Italian Shiatsu College.
In the Tatami Area, you can watch a karate performance, a demonstration of traditional Japanese jujitsu—the martial art that combines technique, awareness, and self-defense and a judo performance.
Don't miss the Kimono Tales by kimono master Fumiko Oh, with a practical demonstration on the use, traditions, and history of kimono dressing; the Samurai Comedy Theater (Kyogen) and the Hannya live show inspired by Noh theater and the story of the famous demon; and finally Ghibli World, a performance by soprano Erika Nakanishi, who, with her magnificent voice, will plonge you in the enchanting atmosphere of the anime of the great master Hayao Miyazaki.
There will also be other activities for the little ones, including Japanese fishing, board games, Kapla playgrounds, face painting, a live drawing session, and various creative activities. Among this year's new additions is the go, a centuries-old board game suitable for all ages, hosted by the Go Club of Rome.
Additionally, Funkamore and Smine, two Street Artists from the Hawana Family/2P2M collective, will be creating live spray-painted manga/ukiyo-e themed artworks. The Incan Tales Community will also be hosting a Cosplay Carpet, a fashion show open to all cosplayers. Finally, for automobile enthusiasts, there will be a Japanese car show hosted by the Japan Car Roma Club.
