The Orchestra of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, conducted by Jaap van Zweden, performs Symphony no. 5 by Anton Bruckner on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the birth of the great Austrian composer (1824 – 2024) at the Auditorium Parco della Musica.
Composed between 1875 and 1876 and revised in the following two years, the Symphony no. 5 has a great relevance in Anton Bruckner's musical production; in fact, it was considered by the composer himself to be one of his best artistic creations. Dedicated to Karl von Stremayr, Austrian education minister, the symphony was later nicknamed the "tragic".
Jaap van Zweden is a Dutch conductor and violinist. He is currently music director of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra.
