«Tacea la notte placida» (Leonora, act I, Scene II)

Il Trovatore by Giuseppe Verdi opens the rich 2021 summer season at the Circus Maximus with a new staging, directed by Daniele Gatti and directed by Lorenzo Mariani, which gives us the great Verdi classic in an original vision in black or white.

Based on the romantic drama "El Trovador" by the Spanish writer Antonio Garcìa-Gutiérrez, the opera, with the libretto by Salvatore Cammarano, was performed for the first time in 1853 at the Apollo Theater in Rome and is part, together with Rigoletto and La Traviata, of the so-called "popular trilogy" of the great composer.

The drama, in four acts and eight scenes, is set in 15th-century Spain and focuses on passions such as love, jealousy, hatred and revenge. The plot, rather intricate and romantic, tells of how Manrico and the Count of Luna, belonging to two different social classes, are both in love with Leonora; in the play the two characters face each other as enemies until death, without knowing that they are brothers.

In Il Trovatore, Verdi's music, which is expressed through the drama of the story, reached artistic maturity and international fame

Fabio Sartori and Piero Pretti alternate in the role of Manrico, while Leonora is played by Roberta Mantegna, who has just returned from her triumph in Luisa Miller conducted by maestro Mariotti; Clémentine Margaine is Azucena, Christopher Maltman and Giovanni Meoni alternate in the role of the Count of Luna and Marco Spotti is Ferrando.

The cast is completed by Marianna Mappa and Domingo Pellicola, two young talents from the current edition of the "Fabbrica" Young Artist Program of the Opera di Roma who interpret the roles of Ines and Ruiz respectively. The new staging will have the sets and costumes by William Orlandi, the lights by Vinicio Cheli, while the videos are signed by Fabio Iaquone and Luca Attilii. Master of the Choir Roberto Gabbiani.
