Il giro. Una storia d’Italia

Il Giro. Una storia d'Italia, Archivio d'Italia - 1970, Felice Gimondi

The Museum of Rome in Trastevere hosts the evocative exhibition dedicated to the history of the prestigious national cycling race, which tells the exciting competition and the country from 1909 to the present day.

On display are more than one hundred images - an unprecedented photographic body mainly from the Riccardi Historical Archive - representing an extraordinary historical narration on a significant cross-section of Italy that embraces the news, technical innovations and advertising media that fuel the passion and myth.

The exhibition path, with a high visual impact, features the great names of the Giro d'Italia - from Fausto Coppi and Gino Bartali to Gimondi, from Moser to Saronni, from Marco Pantani to Vincenzo Nibali - and winds through the evolution of this great sport. Between pursuit races and falls, sprint victories and gruelling climbs, Italy is united around its heroes, followed on the radios or televisions.

The set-up begins with the first edition of the 1909 Giro to end with an empty panel, waiting for the photo of the winner of the 2023 edition after the last stage in Rome.

The exhibition starts with the historic shots of the hard post-war reconstruction times up to the present day: from the stands immortalized in the Arena Civica in Milan in 1913 to Gino Bartali at a political meeting by Giulio Andreotti or to the President of the Republic Giovanni Gronchi receiving cyclists before the start of the Giro d'Italia.

Also exhibited is the bike used in 1945 by Fausto Coppi with the Lazio cycling jacket and the screening of some films from the Rai Teche showing historical editions of the Giro that close the exhibition.

Furthermore, on 26 and 27 May, an off-photographic exhibition in reduced form is organized in Piazza Anco Marzio in Ostia, with the collaboration of Roma Capitale. On the program, a video projection with all the photos displayed on a giant screen positioned on a stage and some themed musical and theatrical performances.

Il Giro. Una storia d'Italia is promoted by Roma Capitale, with the contribution of the Assessorato ai Grandi Eventi, Sport, Turismo e Moda in collaboration with the Assessorato alla Cultura and the Capitoline Superintendence of Cultural Heritage. It is organized by AGR srl in collaboration with Archivio Storico Riccardi, with the support of Enel, partner of the Maglia Rosa, and RCS Sports & Events. The Project coordination is by Stefano Di Traglia. Edited by Maurizio Riccardi and Giovanni Currado.
