After a three week long intense competition and more than 3,400 kilometers across Italy (starting, however, in Durres, Albania), the 108th edition of the most important national cycling race will ends for the seventh time in its history, and for the third year running, in Rome. In the two previous editions, more than 1.5 million Romans and tourists witnessed the champions’ passage along the route.
With a spectacular finale, the successor to Tadej Pogačar, winner of last year’s edition ahead of Colombian Daniel Martínez and Briton Geraint Thomas, will be crowned at the Circus Maximus at the end of the 21st and final stage of the Giro d’Italia 2025. The Roman stage is dedicated this year to Pope Francis, a tribute to his figure and his message of peace and hope in the Jubilee year.
The stage is divided into two parts and starts in Rome-EUR. After crossing the Vatican State and the Vatican Gardens in non-competitive mode (a symbolic passage strongly desired by the recently deceased pontiff), the cyclists will reach Ostia via the coastline. They will then return to the city center and race 8 loops of a 9.5 km circuit on the streets of Rome, with a route that enhances the historical beauty of the city and the excitement of sport. The route runs entirely on city streets: short undulations are interspersed with long straight sections, connected by sometimes tricky bends. The road surface is mostly tarmac, with some short stretches over road pavers (the so-called “sanpietrini”).
Sunday morning also sees the return of the Family Ride, the free ride for adults and children along the streets of the city center. A special Giroland village will be open in Piazza del Popolo: the public will be able to watch the show of La Carovana del Giro and participate in entertainment activities.
