The event, now in its 10th edition, combines the most innovative cinema with the MAXXI Museum of Contemporary Art, one of the most representative places for contemporary art. The program, curated by Mario Sesti, is based on research and experimentation which, as in previous editions, are at the centre of the event.
The first part of the exhibition hosts, in the Museum Square and within the Summer event at MAXXI, the Extra Explore films, a selection of the best Italian cinema, the most surprising and revolutionary. The section offers the public six works selected from the most important national and international festivals, from Cannes to Venice and Taormina. The films are judged by a jury of cinema enthusiasts under 30, led by the actor Giulio Scarpati and the two important film critics Patrizia Pistagnesi and Roberta Ronconi.
The second part of the event, the Video Essay Film Festival (VEFF), instead rewards the best video essays, as new forms of criticism and reflection on cinema through images, text, editing and sounds. Also this year the VEFF is divided into two sections: VEFF Competition, on an open topic, and VEFF Classic, dedicated to the cinema of Pier Paolo Pasolini whose centenary is celebrated.
