An unmissable event which sees the prestigious German orchestra conducted by Kirill Petrenko again on the stage of the Auditorium Parco della Musica for the closing concert of the Romaeuropa Festival 2021.
The historic orchestra, founded in 1882, returns to the capital after a long absence of 17 years for the concert on a single date which marks the final stage of the Berliner European tour. The famous Russian conductor, with the Berliner Philharmoniker since 2019, who has been on the podium of the Orchestra of the Accademia di Santa Cecilia for the third consecutive year, thus confirms the particular link with the Roman institution.
The program includes music very distant in time from each other; opening the Scottish Symphony n.3 by Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy which has as its theme the romantic suggestions of a trip to Edinburgh undertaken by the German composer in 1829 to visit the places linked to Mary Stuart. The Symphony, finished in 1842, was dedicated to Queen Victoria and first performed in Leipzig that same year. Divided into four movements to be performed without interruption between them, it evokes landscapes and melancholy sensations linked to ancient historical memories. On the other hand, we find a completely different climate in Symphony No.10 that Dmitri Šostakovič wrote in 1953 a few months after Stalin's death, in which the great Russian composer recalls the pain of the long years of dictatorship in his country. The work is characterized by a tormented language, rich in chiaroscuro; gloomy in the first part, after the dramatic climax is reached in the main one, it becomes less tense in the ending.
