MAXXI dedicates for the first time an exhibition to Alberto Boatto, one of the most relevant and original figures of critic, intellectual and writer of the last fifty years, author of important studies on the avant-garde of the early twentieth century, on the aesthetic and cultural characteristics of modern world and trends in the visual arts. His books and essays have been translated into the main European languages; he founded and directed numerous magazines such as “Cartabianca”, “Senzamargine” (1968-69) and “La città di Riga” (1976-77).
The exhibition presents a wide selection from the critic's personal archive, given by the family to MAXXI in 2019 and consisting of a large number of manuscripts, important publications, autographed papers, typescripts, personal correspondence and photographic, audio and video material.
A heterogeneous material reconstructing his whole professional activity and showing his "look from the outside", his ability to observe the world from an external, lonely, remote point, in order to grasp a new and surprising physiognomy.
