World Press Photo Exhibition 2023

Chad Ajamian, Australian Floods in Infrared, Southeast Asia and Oceania, Open Format, dettaglio

The Palazzo delle Esposizioni hosts the exhibition dedicated to the prestigious international photojournalism contest, which since 1955 awards the best professional photographers every year.

The exhibition presents a national preview of a gallery of 120 images representing the most important events of our time, demonstrating the immense documentary and narrative capacity of images and their fundamental role as a historical testimony.

The contest, conceived by the World Press Photo Foundation of Amsterdam, is now in its 66th edition and was attended by 3,752 photographers from 127 countries with 60,000 photos and projects. At the centre of the shots of the 24 regional winners and six honourable mentions, evaluated by six regional juries, the historic protests in Iran, the climate change, the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the new realities in Afghanistan controlled by the Taliban.

A global judging panel, composed of the six regional judging panels and President Brent Lewis, photo editor of the New York Times and co-founder of Diversify Photo, selects four photojournalists and documentary photographers, among the 24 regional winners, as global winners for each of the four categories: Singles, Stories, Long Term Projects and Open Format for each of the six areas of the world, Africa, Asia, Europe, North and Central America, South America, South East Asia and Oceania.

Evgeniy Maloletka was the winner of the photo of the year. The image, taken on 9 March 2022, shows a pregnant woman carried on a stretcher outside the maternity ward of a hospital during the siege of Mariupol in Ukraine.
The Danish photographer Mads Nissen won the World Press Photo Story of the Year Award with The Price of Peace in Afghanistan, created for Politiken/Panos Pictures, which recalls the daily difficulties of the Afghan people under the Taliban regime. Two other awards went to Armenian photographer Anush Babajanyan for Battered Waters, for VII Photo/National Geographic Society, who won the World Press Photo Long-Term Project Award, and to Egyptian photographer Mohamed Madhy, author of Here, The doors don't know me, for which he received the World Press Photo Open Format Award.

Among the regional winners are two Italian photographers: Simone Tramonte won in the Long-Term Projects category for Europe with his work Net-Zero Transition, and Alessandro Cinque was awarded among the regional winners for his project Alpaqueros.
