A huge celebration in the heart of Rome and a spectacular challenge featuring fencing moves and thrusts, open to everyone, with the Pantheon as a backdrop. To mark World Fencing Day, Piazza della Rotonda will host the world’s largest non-competitive event dedicated to fencing, created to celebrate the beauty and appeal of this sport in all its inclusive glory.
Now in its sixteenth year, the event is organised by the Accademia d’Armi Musumeci Greco 1878, this year for the first time in official collaboration with FederScherma - the Italian Fencing Federation. Against a unique historical backdrop, top-level athletes are set to put on a spectacle of sport and social inclusion, alternating – as in previous editions – between moments of competition and entertainment. Olympic, Paralympic and visually impaired fencers, whether able-bodied or in wheelchairs, will take to the same piste, accompanied by commentary from Novella Calligaris, a legend of Italian swimming and sport, and by the President of the Academy, Renzo Musumeci Greco – a fencing master and son of Enzo Musumeci Greco, the inventor of theatrical fencing and a leading figure in Italian cinema from the 1940s to the 1970s.
Over the years, the event has welcomed some of the biggest stars of Italian and international fencing sport, from Valentina Vezzali to Aldo Montano, including Elisa Di Francisca, Margherita Granbassi, Bebe Vio Grandis and many other illustrious figures from the fencing piste. As always, the invitation to take to the piste is open to fencers of all ages, whether competitive or amateur, provided they have their own regulation equipment. Participation is free of charge and open to all, with no formalities required, and participants can get changed at the Casa Museo Accademia d’Armi Musumeci Greco, just a few meters from the Pantheon, where guided tours are also available.
