GAM 100. Un secolo di Galleria comunale 1925-2025

It was 28 October 1925, and in the halls of Palazzo Caffarelli on the Capitoline Hill, Rome's Modern Art Gallery was born.

Exactly 100 years later, in today's museum location on Via Francesco Crispi, built inside the former convent of the Discalced Carmelites in San Giuseppe Capo le Case, its foundation is being celebrated with the major exhibition GAM 100. Un secolo di Galleria comunale 1925 – 2025 (GAM 100. A century of the Municipal Gallery 1925 – 2025).

Today, the Gallery houses over 3,000 works in its collection, including paintings, sculptures, drawings and graphic works that bear witness to artistic movements and trends from the 19th to the 21st century.

GAM 100. Un secolo di Galleria comunale 1925 – 2025 is a window onto these Italian and European experiences, from the late 19th century to the avant-garde movements such as Futurism, Secession, the Roman School, the Novecento and the Return to Order, the post-war period and the new canons of Abstraction, Informalism and the Neo-Avant-Garde.

Thanks to over 100 selected works, including authentic masterpieces by artists such as Giacomo Balla, Carlo Carrà, Mario Sironi, Fortunato Depero, Antonio Donghi, Renato Guttuso, Giorgio de Chirico, and Antonietta Raphaël Mafai, to name but a few, you can travel through a century of art and history, retracing the evolution of the Capitoline Gallery through its locations, dates and key events: from its inauguration in 1925 at Palazzo Caffarelli and its reopening in 1931 under the name Galleria Mussolini, curated by Antonio Muñoz, to the first Quadriennale in 1931 at Palazzo delle Esposizioni; from its rebirth at Palazzo Braschi in 1952 to its new location at Palazzo delle Esposizioni (from 1963 to 1972) curated by Carlo Pietrangeli. This culminated in the double inauguration in 1995 and 2011 at its current location.

A century of changes, transformations and upheavals whose sole purpose has been to protect and promote modern art.
