Based on an idea by journalist Nicola Cilento, former footballer Vincent Candela and set designer Roberto Feri, the Museo dello Sport had its first permanent home in the municipality of Artena, about 30 kilometers from Rome. Since June 2022, it has been housed in the undergrounds of Piazza Navona, within the archaeological area of the Stadium of Domitian, the first masonry athletics stadium in ancient Rome and a unique testimony to the history of sport.
The museum is a window onto the sporting world of today and yesterday, a laboratory of dynamic content designed to spread and celebrate the most authentic values of sport, an inclusive world without borders that has the ability to unite distant generations and cultures. The exhibition consists of memorabilia related to different disciplines and panels that recount emblematic figures, unforgettable moments, extraordinary victories and epic defeats, in Italy and around the world. It takes visitors on a journey of memory and emotion, showing how sport is one of the most powerful tools for communication and integration.
The memorabilia on display, from jerseys worn by great champions to trophies, each tell a piece of history and come from the museum (the first collection and cataloguing activities began in 1999), private collectors, other museums and anyone who wishes to contribute to the largest virtual exhibition of sports memorabilia in the world. The heart of the museum is the Hall of Legends, a virtual space with detailed information sheets, images and testimonials dedicated to the champions who have surpassed all limits, transforming their achievements into myth and continuing to inspire new generations.
