The Church of Santa Maria Mater Ecclesiae is a church in Rome, in the Torrino area, in Piazza Cina.
It was built, to plans by engineer Giorgio Pacini between 1986 and 1988, to replace an earlier church, which still exists and contains a sculpture by Eustachio Errani depicting Mary Mother of the Church (Mater Ecclesiae in Latin). The ceremony of the laying of the foundation stone of the new church took place on 1 June 1986. A stone, found during some excavations in the Vatican and belonging to the ancient basilica of St. Peter's in the Vatican, blessed by Pope Paul VI on the occasion of the closing of the Second Vatican Council, was used for the occasion (Santa Maria Mater Ecclesiae is in fact the parish church that Pope Paul VI wanted in memory of the Council).
The new building was solemnly consecrated by Cardinal Vicar Ugo Poletti on 28 May 1988.
On 19 February 1989, the church received a pastoral visit from Pope John Paul II.
The church is a parish seat, established by Cardinal Vicar Luigi Traglia on 13 May 1966 with the decree Ne sacrosancti concilii.
