ENTRATE is a multi-year program that invites emerging designers to contribute to MAXXI’s new contemporary design collection through an intervention in the museum’s first reception area: its entrance. The first edition of the project opens with Nacho Carbonell, a Spanish designer based in the Netherlands, invited for his research into materials, his experimentation and his ability to rethink the relationship between spaces, objects and functions.
With Nacho Carbonell. Memory, in practice, curated by Martina Muzi, the museum lobby becomes a visionary landscape dominated by an imposing seven-meter-high tree made from pine trunks recovered from Rome’s parks and assembled using techniques inspired by the conservation of ancient trees. The tree’s foliage consists of layers of colored fishing nets of different textures, recovered near the designer’s studio in Eindhoven or supplied by ISPRA, the Higher Institute for Environmental Protection and Research, as part of a project for the restoration and protection of the seabed. Under and inside the tree, a living space is created: a welcoming environment, made up of objects and furnishings, where one can pause, observe, and imagine.
Personal memory is a recurring element in Nacho Carbonell’s artistic practice, an invisible thread that ties together the materials, gestures and forms of his design, rooted in the natural landscapes of his childhood. Like memory, made up of layers, images and emotions, his creative process also overlaps nature and artifice, manual gestures and industrial manufacturing, in a fluid dialogue between past and present, matter and vision. Memory, in practice is an evocative reconstruction of an environment inspired by the places of the designer’s childhood, who grew up in Valencia between the garden of his home and the sea that bathes the city. It tells how design, which starts from personal memory and develops through experimentation, can extend and create new collective memories through the use, functions and stories of those who experience them.
