An innovative play of lights and shadows illuminates the façade of the first and oldest of the four major papal basilicas, the Archbasilica of San Giovanni in Laterano, "Mother and Head of all the Churches in the city and in the world", whose old lighting system has been replaced with state-of-the-art projectors.
A total of 106, positioned so as to enhance the grandiose 18th-century architecture of the main façade and of the 16 statues that surmount it, with the so-called "accent" lighting technique, which radiates light on the salient places of the structure respecting the areas of shadow, but bringing all the attention to the basilica.
The new artistic lighting was created in just ten days, and also affected the northern façade of the Complex, the two medieval bell towers, the portico and the loggia frescoed with sacred images.
The work, an important step in the implementing plan by Acea to enhance Rome historical, artistic and monumental heritage, was carried out with the support of Roma Capitale and the Infrastructure and Services Department of the Governorate of Vatican City.
