The spring of cherry trees: Hanami at Rome’s Botanical Garden

A beautiful and heartbreaking view, a play of colors with a large pink palette: on the occasion of the cherry blossoms of the Japanese garden, the Botanical Garden of Rome celebrates the idea of nature that permeates the Japanese cultural and artistic tradition with a dedicated event, on the weekend of 9 and 10 April.

Hanami literally means “flowers viewing”, enjoying the view of spring blossoming, but the deepest meaning of this ancient and popular rite is connected to the fragility and transience of life. The surprising and ephemeral beauty of cherry blossoms contains in itself the melancholy of the end, the awareness of impermanence that runs through Japanese thought.

Organized under the patronage of the Japanese Cultural Institute in Rome and the Italy Japan Foundation, “Hanami all’Orto Botanico” accompanies visitors along a free path, made up of exhibitions, guided tours of the Botanical Garden and the Japanese garden, conferences and meetings, green set up and origami workshops for children. Plants, bonsai trees and kokedama, kimonos and sweets animate the “nippon market” while the tea ceremony is organized by the Urasenke Center. For more information, visit the official website.
