Tradition, competitiveness, elegance, novelty and curiosity on stage at the Foro Italico
From 29 April to 18 May, the most beloved and winning champions of international tennis will arrive at the Foro Italico Complex, historic Roman venue, for the 82nd edition of the Internazionali BNL d'Italia: three weeks of competitions and more than 300 matches inside a larger and more functional site.
A real ‘new era’ for the eagerly awaited tournament. This year's novelty, in addition to the return to the field of world number one Jannik Sinner right in Rome, is the new look of the Park of the Foro Italico. The surface area has increased from 12 to 20 hectares, with an extension involving the Stadio dei Marmi named after Pietro Mennea, the SuperTennis Arena (a stadium with a capacity of 3,000 spectators) and two 800-seat courts. The four main clay courts will therefore be the SuperTennis Arena, the Central Court, the Grand Stand Arena and the “Pietrangeli”. There will be a total of nine playing facilities and twelve training facilities, two of which will be located along the Tiber for the first time, under the shadow of the Ponte della Musica.
Rome will be able to experience tennis even closer, thanks to the court set up in Piazza del Popolo, where everyone will have the opportunity to watch performances and matches free of charge.
There will also be space for many side activities, with the commitment of the Istituto superiore di formazione “Roberto Lombardi” (Roberto Lombardi Higher Education Institute) and the play opportunities for the youngest in the Young Village. From 16 to 18 May, there will also be the Wheelchair Internationals, which will see the greatest champions of wheelchair tennis on the court.
As far as the main tournament is concerned, together with Sinner, 78 of the world's top 100 man players and 70 of the top 100 female players will arrive on the clay courts of the Foro Italico. Among the men: Zverev, Djokovic, Medvedev, Alcaraz, Fritz and then the Italians Musetti, Berrettini Cobolli, Arnaldi, Sonego, Darderi and Bellucci. Among the women: Sabalenka, Swiatek, Pegula and the Italians Paolini and Bronzetti.
The Tournament
Part of the ATP Masters 1000 Circuit and the WTA 1000 Circuit, the Internazionali BNL d'Italia are held on clay courts and are the most important and prestigious Italian men's and women's tennis event.
Since 2023, the tournament has been partly renewed and transformed into a ‘mini Slam’ to offer, to the thousands of fans who crowd the Foro Italico Park every year, an even more intense and richer spectacle in which to admire all the most acclaimed protagonists of the international circuit.
Last year's prize money was very rich: Germany's Alexander Zverev won no less than 9,094,379 Euros, Poland's Iga Świątek, winner of the women's tournament, 4,791,105 Euros, a good 1.2 million more than in 2023, as part of a path that will soon lead to equal prize money.
The winningest player in the history of the Internazionali di Roma is Rafa Nadal, recently retired from competition, with ten victories to his credit in singles. Nadal is also the player with the most matches won in the history of the tournament and was the protagonist in 2005 of the longest final ever at the Internazionali - five hours and 14 intense and interminable minutes of pure agonism - vs Argentine Guillermo Coria.
If Rafael Nadal is the undisputed king of Rome, the queen of the Foro Italico is the American Chris Evert who, between the second half of the 1970s and the early 1980s, returned to the United States with five trophies, setting an absolute record in the women's field.
