Electric scooters: a new sharing model is underway

from 12 May 2020 to 30 June 2020

Easy to use, with their cost effectiveness and flexibility, combined with advanced technology, they are the best way to improve sustainable mobility, especially for short journeys. We’re talking about electric scooters: included in the 2020 Italian Budget Law among the protagonists of city traffic, their use is expected to increase, both for their reduced environmental impact and in consideration of the transformations and limitations of access involving the public transport in the management of the health emergency.

In view of the upcoming incentives for purchasing electric scooters announced by the Government, the Municipality of Rome has approved the guidelines for the performance of the sharing services, opening the market to private operators and offering an additional service to support traditional public transport.

The project foresees an experimental two-year phase: the operators are asked to share data in real time with Roma Capitale, for constant monitoring of the vehicles, and to respect minimum standards – such as the limit of vehicles and the areas of activity – and rules on circulation and parking. Electric scooters must be located in real time and equipped with insurance coverage. For each operator, the fleet must consist of a minimum of 750 and a maximum of 1,000 vehicles. A maximum of 16,000 scooters will be allowed throughout the Capitoline territory.
