Intorno alle Mura

Built over 1,700 years ago, the Aurelian Walls are among the longest and best preserved ancient walls in the world: an extraordinary monument with 381 towers and 18 gates, some of which have been transformed over time by famous architects, including Michelangelo who was requested to redesign Porta Pia. “Intorno alle Mura” - “Around the Walls is the special day of events that highlights this archaeological, historical and cultural heritage and offers a new “point of view” on the walls and, at the same time, on the city and its history. In addition to the guided tours promoted by the Capitoline Superintendence for Cultural Heritage as part of the European Heritage Days 2021 and the cultural initiatives carried out by local associations, the program also includes performances, installations, shows and concerts.

Great attention is paid to the wall section in via Campania, whose walkway was reopened to the public for the first time this summer: an acoustic and live sound system by Muta Imago and Industria Indipendente, made up of voices, interference, ropes and percussion, accompanies us to its discovery from 3.30 to 6.30 pm. Guided tours are also scheduled. Music has a leading role also in the Gardens of via Carlo Felice, with the Orchestra Popolare Italiana del Parco della Musica di Roma directed by Ambrogio Sparagna performing  “Fra, Fre, Fro - Gran Parata di Mascheroni, Sonatori, Campanari e del filosofo Pulcinella” at 4 pm, 5 pm and 6 pm. Specially for kids are the stories of the “Guarattella Pulcinella” featuring Maurizio Stammati and his puppet shack, at 4.30pm and 5.30pm. Guided tours are scheduled from 3.30 to 6 pm.

Not far away, in Porta Asinaria, the program includes both guided tours from 3.30 to 6 pm and the concert “Una porta sulla Mitteleuropa” by the National Academy of Santa Cecilia, at 4, 5 and 6 pm, with music by Bach and Haydn and of the Hungarian folk tradition. Porta Metronia is part of the initiative with the performance “Il mito di Efesto” at 4.30 pm and 5.30 pm, and the Reunion Saxophone Quartet's concert by the Saint Louis College of Music, at 4 pm, 5 pm and 6 pm. Guided tours are scheduled from 3.30 to 5.30 pm from Porta Metronia to Porta San Sebastiano, with access to the Museum of the Walls to continue the tour on the adjacent walkway. The guided tour program also involves the walkway of Viale Pretoriano (reopened this summer) from 3.30 to 6 pm; the stretch of walls from Porta San Paolo to Viale del Campo Boario, from 3.30 pm to 6.30 pm, and that from Porta San Pancrazio to Porta Settimiana, at 3.30 pm and 5.00 pm.

With the coordination of Comitato Mura Latine Aps and Inarch Lazio, associations and local cultural realities propose additional initiatives and walks: for more information on the program, please visit the website www.muralatine.it or the facebook page @GiornatadelleMura.
