Tempietto di Santa Maria del Carmine e del Monte Libano

In the Rione Sant'Angelo, in Piazza Costaguti, is an amazing little temple, built in 1759 to protect an icon of Santa Maria del Carmelo (or of Mount Lebanon).

It was a small Catholic place where, in the early hours of the evening, forced sermons were held for the Jews of the nearby ghetto.

The temple has a circular plan, with a dome supported by six Doric columns and two Tuscan travertine half-columns, enclosed by an eighteenth-century railing. The interior of the dome is decorated with stuccos depicting the dove of the Holy Spirit.

Already restored during the 19th century, the deconsecrated and abandoned temple was occupied by the shop of a cobbler for a long time.

Then, at the beginning of the 2000s, the unusual building was restored again by the Superintendency. Unfortunately, nothing remains of the sacred image and the altar.
