Torre dei Capocci

The building, which stands right in the middle of the square, was built by the Arcioni family, and later passed to the Capocci, a noble family from Viterbo. The Capocci family built a series of houses around the tower, which no longer exist, making the building a sort of fortified citadel. The clear chromatic differentiation, clearly visible at the height of the third floor, indicates the limit under which the buildings were leaning against the tower and were demolished at the end of the 19th century: as a result, the walls had to be restored and rebuilt in curtain wall.

The upper part, on the other hand, is the original brickwork (material taken from the nearby Baths of Trajan) and dates back to the end of the 12th century. The 36-metre-high tower has a square base, small windows framed in travertine and consists of seven floors, in addition to the ground floor and the terrace, the latter of which is bordered by a masonry parapet, edged with five full merlons on each side, where the exit of the internal staircase emerges.
