Rome is once again aglow with cinema. From 13 to 25 October 2026, the Auditorium Parco della Musica Ennio Morricone will host the 21st edition of the Rome Film Festival, organised by the Fondazione Cinema per Roma.
The artistic director of this prestigious festival is Paola Malanga, a journalist and film critic, one of the founders of the magazine Duel and a key contributor to Paolo Mereghetti’s Dizionario dei Film, supported by a committee of professionals with extensive experience in the sector.
Over the course of its previous editions, the Festival has welcomed some of the most important figures in world cinema and has presented films that have gone on to win Oscars®, Golden Globes, European Film Awards, Césars and Goyas, as well as the most prestigious Italian film awards, from the David di Donatello to the Nastri d’Argento.
For the 2026 edition, the Festival’s official image pays tribute to one of the most iconic figures in the history of Italian cinema: Monica Vitti. Ninety-five years after her birth, the event celebrates her with a striking photograph taken by Sergio Strizzi on the set of L’eclisse, Michelangelo Antonioni’s masterpiece which won the Special Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 1962.
The programme for the 2026 Rome Film Festival is divided into several sections: Concorso Progressive Cinema – Visioni per il Mondo Di Domani, Freestyle, Grand Public, Proiezioni Speciali, Best Of 2026 and Storia del Cinema.
Among the events already announced, the Industry Lifetime Achievement Award for Tessa Ross and the Lifetime Achievement Award for Javier Bardem stand out.
Paolo Genovese’s Il rumore delle cose nuove, featured in the Grand Public section, has been chosen as the opening film for the 2026 Rome Film Festival. The Festival’s opening ceremony will be hosted by DJ and television and radio presenter Ema Stokholma.
The event also involves other venues and cultural organisations across the capital, further extending the Festival’s presence throughout Rome.
The full programme for the event is available on the official website of the Rome Film Fest.
