FlaMENcos, on stage at the Ghione Theatre, has a special feature: it is a show of flamenco dance, singing, and guitar performed exclusively by men, in which six top-level artists come together on stage, demonstrating that the essence of this gypsy dance can take many forms without losing all its authenticity, emotional depth, strength, and above all, elegance.
The title itself suggests this with a play on words; in the word flamencos, the central letters are capitalized, MEN, meaning "men" in English. Although flamenco has a long tradition of male bailaores, the collective imagination, especially outside Spain, is often dominated by female dancers with the bata de cola, the long train, and the fan.
FlaMENcos represents a celebration of Spanish cultural identity, in which flamenco returns to its place on the stage with a program that honors its roots and looks to the future, in which every gesture is linked to collective memory and the duende (i.e., the mysterious and profound charm) that defines this art.
Singing, flamenco guitar, and dance blend in a choreography that evokes the restrained passion, expressive power, and profound emotion of flamenco. A show designed for lovers of this dance, but not only.
