La Traviata screened on a giant screen in Piazza di Spagna, live from the Costanzi Theatre

La traviata, Francesca Dotto( Violetta) ®Yasuko Kageyama-Opera di Roma 2015-16

On 30 June, one of the most iconic landmarks in Rome will be the backdrop for grand opera: locals, tourists and music lovers can enjoy for freesubject to seat availability – the screening of Giuseppe Verdi’s masterpiece, scheduled for its final performance at the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, broadcast live at 8 pm on a giant screen on the Spanish Steps in Piazza di Spagna.

The opera, one of the most famous in the Italian repertoire, is staged in the 2016 version created by Valentino Garavani and Giancarlo Giammetti, with Sofia Coppola's debut as an opera director. For the occasion, the PM23 exhibition space in Piazza Mignanelli will exceptionally extend the opening hours of ‘Venus, the exhibition dedicated to the emblematic works and site-specific pieces by Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos, inspired by the legacy of the famous fashion designer, until midnight.

The production represents a splendid combination of the great Italian tradition of opera and the glamour of fashion and cinema, featuring the magnificent Valentino costumes created for Violetta, as well as those by the Maison Valentino's then creative directors, Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli, designed for Flora and the choir of Rome’s opera house.

The production features a prestigious cast, including Ermonela Jaho (Violetta), Dmitry Korchak and Amartuvshin Enkhbat, accompanied by the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma Orchestra, conducted by Maestro Francesco Ivan Ciampa, the Chorus, and the Corps de Ballet.

The initiative, promoted through collaboration between the two institutions, is part of the programme run by the Valentino Garavani and Giancarlo Giammetti Foundation, whose mission is to support and promote the arts as tools for cultural and social development.

The event is organised in collaboration with Roma Capitale, the Office of the Mayor, the Assessorato alla Cultura, the Assessorato ai Grandi Eventi, Sport, Turismo e Moda, and Municipio I Roma Centro, with the aim of transforming one of the capital’s most iconic locations into a hub for social interaction and participation, reaffirming the value of the public sphere as an opportunity for shared experience.
