Exploring a city step by step, taking the time to do so, is one of the simplest and most effective ways to uncover its secrets and soak up its atmosphere: a slow and sustainable tourism, a more relaxed way of travelling and enjoying history and culture, which is at the same time freer and full of more surprises.
For the third consecutive year, Rome has been confirmed as the best city in the world to visit on foot. This is according to the 2026 Best 100 Walking Cities ranking by GuruWalk, a website specializing in walking tours. The ranking reflects the actual behavior of travelers over the last twelve months, from April 2025 to April 2026, based on hundreds of thousands of verified reviews and thousands of tours booked across more than 800 destinations. The 100 most visited cities were assessed based on visitor numbers and satisfaction levels, on the premise that the best indicator of a city’s “walkability” is the number of people already exploring it on foot accompanied by local guides.
What secures Rome’s top spot on the podium is the variety of walking routes and the concentration of cultural heritage in the Eternal City, an unmissable destination for lovers of history and art. Travelers, tourists and fans of walking city tours appreciate its timeless charm, its alleys and squares: from the Colosseum to Trevi Fountain and the Pantheon, every corner of the city is part of an open-air museum to be explored by walking.
