70th ANNIVERSARY OF THE TWINNING BETWEEN ROME AND PARIS

From 29 January to 31 December 2026, a series of initiatives will celebrate the seventieth anniversary of the historic and exclusive twinning between Rome and Paris, further strengthening their enduring bond of friendship.

The year 2026 marks an exceptional milestone in the history of relations between the two great European capitals: Rome and Paris celebrate the 70th anniversary of their twinning, signed on 30 January 1956 and sealed by the famous motto expressing the mutual admiration between the two cities: “Only Paris is worthy of Rome; only Rome is worthy of Paris.”

Celebrations for this special anniversary were launched on New Year’s Eve 2026, with striking light projections illuminating Via del Corso in Rome and the Arc de Triomphe in Paris.

Institutional meetings, aimed at renewing cooperation between the two cities, are scheduled for 29 January in Rome and 30 January in Paris, in the presence of Mayors Anne Hidalgo and Roberto Gualtieri.

Throughout 2026, Paris and Rome will take centre stage in a wide-ranging cultural programme designed to showcase the artistic, historical and creative heritage of both capitals.

The initiatives, promoted through collaboration between prestigious Roman and Parisian cultural institutions, reflect a shared journey that has enabled the two cities to build over time a strong bridge of culture, art and beauty.

As part of the Rome–Paris twinning, Parisian citizens are entitled to free admission to Rome’s Civic Museums, while Roman residents are granted free access to participating Parisian museums, details of which can be found at www.paris.fr
