The Teatro dell'Opera di Roma hosts the first Italian premiere of the opera by Kaija Saariaho, the great Finnish composer who passed away in 2023.
Composed in 2005 on a libretto in French by Amin Maalouf, Adriana Mater was premiered at the Opéra Bastille in April 2006 under the direction of the renowned Peter Sellars, who makes his debut at the Costanzi in the new production realised in collaboration with the San Francisco Symphony.
Set in a country devastated by civil war, the opera in two acts and seven scenes tells the story of Adriana, a young woman who, after being raped by a soldier, discovers she is pregnant and decides to keep the child, despite her sister Refka's attempts to dissuade her. While her son Yonas grows up, Adriana wonders whether he will become as violent as the man who fathered him or as sensitive and lovable as she is.
On stage are the British mezzo soprano Fleur Barron (Adriana), the French soprano Axelle Fanyo (Refka), the American tenor Nicholas Phan (Yonas) and the British baritone Christopher Purves, accompanied by the Orchestra and Chorus of the Teatro dell'Opera, conducted respectively by Ernest Martínez Izquierdo, making his debut on the podium of the Rome Opera House, and Ciro Visco.
