Teatro Ostia Antica Festival - Il senso del passato

Five shows, a unique cultural experience that invites us to rediscover the timeless value of the classics and the narrative power of ancient theatre through the lens of contemporary sensibility. Curated by the Teatro di Roma, the first edition of the Teatro Ostia Antica Festival takes place in three prestigious venues: the Auditorium Parco della Musica Ennio Morricone, the Teatro Argentina and the archaeological site of the Roman Theatre of Ostia Antica, which recovers its majestic vocation as an open-air stage.

The festival reinterprets universal themes such as humanity, justice and moral law in a modern key. Inspired by the eternal myth of Antigone, the shows in the program combine prose, music and dance, blending the echo of the classics with the energy of the contemporary world. Bringing this vision to life is a group of international masters and artists, accompanied by exceptional performers. Maestro Francesco Lanzillotta, one of the most acclaimed conductors of his generation, opens the festival at the Auditorium Parco della Musica with Mendelssohn’s Antigone, a rarely performed masterpiece, performed by the Orchestra and Choir of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, with Massimo Popolizio as narrator.

At the Roman Theatre in Ostia Antica, Luca De Fusco, artistic director of the Teatro di Roma, stages Oedipus Rex, while Roberto Latini, innovator of the contemporary scene, brings Jean Anouilh’s Antigone to the stage. At the Teatro Argentina, Norwegian choreographer Alan Lucien Øyen presents the world premiere of Antigone, a symphony of dance and words. The show features dancers from the Winter Guests company, alongside some of the most acclaimed performers from Pina Bausch’s Tanztheater Wuppertal and Antonin Monié from the Paris Opera. The festival closes with director Eva Romero staging Silvia Zarco’s Ifigenia at the Roman Theatre in Ostia Antica, offering a final, intense glimpse into this journey through myth.
