Adam’s Passion

Adam's Passion by Arvo Pärt is staged at the Teatro dell'Opera in Rome under the direction of Robert Wilson; Difficult to classify as a genre, Adam's Passion refers to the idea of ​​Richard Wagner's "total work of art", i.e. a work that blends music, theatre, song and dance to tell the story of Adam immediately after his expulsion from Eden.

The opera reuses three compositions by Pärt: Adam's Lament (2009), Tabula rasa (1977) and Miserere (1989), introduced by a symphony that the Estonian composer wrote expressly for the performance, Sequentia (2014), dedicated to Wilson himself. In the opera Adam, after reaching and plucking the fruit from the tree of knowledge, is driven out of Eden by God and left to himself in a desolate land. Here, the protagonist receives visions showing him the future horrors committed and suffered by men, the result of the fall he caused. These terrible visions lead Adam to beg God for forgiveness.
