The Roma City Ballet Company is the protagonist of a new edition of The Nutcracker by Pëtr Il'ič Čajkovskij, one of the most represented classical ballets in the world. The production is faithfully based on the choreographer Marius Petipa's original version of the traditional ballet composed by the great Russian musician between 1891 and 1892 and based on the tale Nutcracker and the Rat King by Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann.
Performed for the first time in December 1892 at the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg, it is set in the home of the wealthy Mr. Stralhbaun, during a party to celebrate Christmas Eve. On this occasion, the old family friend Drosselmeyer entertains guests with conjuring tricks, gifts and mechanical puppets built by himself. Clara, daughter of the Stralhbaun, receives as a gift a nutcracker with the features of a toy soldier and, at the end of the evening, falling asleep, imagines a fantastic world that soon comes to life before her eyes. After battling the Mouse King and his army, he embarks on a journey to the Kingdom of Sweets, where the latter dance to cheer Clara and Fritz, the nutcracker who turned into a beautiful prince. But it is only a dream: Clara, awakened, is left with only the memory of enchanted creatures and fascinating adventures.
The character of Drosselmeyer, is played by the former principal dancer of the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma Manuel Paruccini and with him, on the stage, two exceptional etoiles of the Berlin Opera: Iana Salenko and Dinu Tamazlacaru in the roles of the Confetto Fairy and the Nutcracker Prince. The direction and choreography are by Luciano Cannito, the sets by Italo Grassi and the costumes by Giusi Giustino.
