The restyling of the Via Sannio Gardens, between nature and archeology

An over 9 thousand square meter green area that hides much more. The reopening of the Via Sannio Gardens, completely renovated thanks to the joint work of Roma Capitale, Soprintendenza Speciale Archeologia Belle Arti e Paesaggio di Roma, Metro C and Roma Metropolitane, gives a new imprint to an area rich in history, close to the Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano and the Aurelian Walls.

During the excavations of Metro C important archaeological remains have re-emerged, including the remains of an imposing portico built at the time of the Emperor Claudius: with the innovative restyling of the area, it was decided to reproduce its trace on the surface, relocating some original travertine blocks in the same position where they were found and planting a row of thin cypresses to suggest the once existing colonnade.

A green and welcoming space, with benches, fountains and a play area for kids, which also becomes an opportunity to travel into the past and rediscover the inexhaustible heritage of Rome, which continues to emerge from the underground. And to make the monumental stratigraphy of the site visible and understandable, new didactic panels will be installed.
