Palazzo Barberini rearranges its seventeenth-century masterpieces

Caravaggio, Giuditta e Oloferne, 1599 ca, Palazzo Barberini, particolare
desde 16 Diciembre 2019 hasta 31 Marzo 2020

10 newly-restored rooms reopen to the public, spanning over more than 500 square meters and offering a new visitor route of the museum, which now has a total of 42 rooms with over 400 works from the Middle Ages to the eighteenth century. With the latest restoration works, the northern wing of the piano nobile of Palazzo Barberini shows new lighting, new explanatory panels and captions, and above all a new painting organization.

The main change concerns the three paintings by Caravaggio, now exhibited alongside paintings by, among others, Giovanni Baglione, Simon Vouet and Orazio Gentileschi, to better understand not only Caravaggio's strength but also the context and the choices of patrons and merchants of the seventeenth century. In total 80 works are affected by the new organization, following mostly chronological and geographical order, starting with the Late Roman Mannerism and continuing with the spaces dedicated to Venetian painters of the late sixteenth century, ending with Guercino and the famous Portrait of Beatrice Cenci by Guido Reni.

In addition to the reopening of some windows overlooking the gardens of the Palace, the refurbishment offers the possibility of visiting a former chapel transformed into a hall in the early nineteenth century (where Annibale Carracci’s portable Altarolo is exhibited) and the frescoed room with the three great landscapes by Paul Bril from the Mattei collection.
