Curated by Pippo Ciorra and Elena Tinacci, the exhibition at the Galleria KME of the MAXXI museum pays tribute to the 80th anniversary of the Italian Republic by re-examining the recent past through the lens of architecture and the contribution of architects and urban planners in interpreting the country’s cultural, social, economic and political imperatives.
The exhibition opens with interviews with some of the most prominent figures in Italian architecture (such as Stefano Boeri, Massimiliano Fuksas, Renzo Piano and Paola Viganò) and by an installation paying homage to the Monument to the Fallen in the Nazi Extermination Camps by Studio BBPR in Milan, reinterpreted by Matilde Cassani. The opening section comprises archival materials illustrating the early years of democratic and republican Italy.
The exhibition continues with projects by eight successful and internationally renowned Italian studios: DEMOGO, MoDus Architects, Giulia De Appolonia, Francesca Torzo, Studio Labics, Barozzi Veiga, ELASTICO Farm, and Kuehn Malvezzi. They are the representatives of the so-called “Erasmus generation”, born between the late 1960s and the early 1980s, presented in the exhibition from two different perspectives: a photographic project by Allegra Martin and a large table on which each architect has summarized their own way of working.
The exhibition concludes with a showcase of the finalist projects from NXT, the program through which MAXXI has, for over ten years, invited young designers to propose an installation to be hosted during the summer in the museum’s outdoor space.
