The Quirino Theatre presents a masterpiece of twentieth-century literature, La coscienza di Zeno (Zeno's conscience) by Italo Svevo (1861-1928), a pioneering novel with a European scope, ironic and fascinatingly complex, which celebrated its centenary in 2023.
The novel, in fact, springs from the notes of the protagonist, who undergoes treatment by the psychoanalyst Doctor S., seeking, through it, to resolve his suffering, his neurosis, and above all, his ineptitude. His perception of himself as ill and his stubborn - but never entirely convinced - attempts to change and heal, lead Zeno to navigate his life, intertwining bourgeois daily life with surreal episodes rich in humor and truth.
Characterized by the experimentation of an innovative style of writing that assimilates concepts from Freud's new psychoanalytic doctrine applied to the nascent complexity of modern twentieth-century man, the novel represents an unparalleled fresco of a Central European Trieste of the early twentieth century, in which the protagonist Zeno Cosini moves, dealing with his fears, his anxieties, his addiction to smoking and the vicissitudes of love, sketched with that modernity and complexity that only the pen of a brilliant writer like Italo Svevo could express.
