The MAXXI Museo Nazionali delle Arti del XXI secolo is hosting the largest solo exhibition ever dedicated in Italy to the artist and filmmaker Rosa Barba, one of the most interesting and original figures on the international contemporary art scene.
Curated by Francesco Stocchi, the exhibition recounts the artist’s more than twenty years of research, spanning cinema, literature and science, through some of his most significant sculptures and films, veritable architectures of light in motion that explore time, memory and reality. At the heart of the project are two new productions presented at MAXXI in an exclusive preview: the 35 mm film Myth and Mercury and the kinetic sculpture They Are Taking All My Letters, composed of steel, acrylic, aluminium, LEDs, motors and 34 vertical strips of 70 mm celluloid film in constant motion, with printed words taken from texts by Susan Howe, Charles Olson, Robert Creeley and the artist herself.
The exhibition, designed by Rosa Barba herself in dialogue with the museum spaces, is conceived as a three-dimensional musical score that intertwines film, language, sound and light, transforming the MAXXI into a dynamic landscape and making the exhibition a unique experience.
