The Auditorium Parco della Musica Ennio Morricone opens its doors to a new and fascinating journey through time: “Città mondo”, the latest series of Lezioni di Storia conceived by Editori Laterza and produced in collaboration with the Fondazione Musica per Roma. Nine great cities, nine pivotal moments in world history: battles, revolutions, and social and economic transformations that have shaped entire eras. On the stage of the Sala Sinopoli, historians will guide the audience through the metropolises of the past, revealing their vitality, urban and cultural complexity, contradictions and beauty. It will be a journey across centuries and continents, from the roots of the ancient world to the modern age.
This new series also marks an important milestone – the twentieth anniversary of Lezioni di Storia (History Lessons), a project that has succeeded in transforming knowledge into a shared cultural experience. It all began with an idea by Giuseppe Laterza, warmly embraced by then Mayor Walter Veltroni and brought to life thanks to the Auditorium, under the direction of Carlo Fuortes. At the very first lecture, given by Andrea Carandini, two thousand people turned up — a crowd worthy of a rock concert, as the newspapers wrote. Since then, the Sundays dedicated to history have become unmissable events, with queues forming at dawn and packed auditoriums every time.
Over the years, the lectures have become a true cultural phenomenon. And from the very beginning, the guiding voice has been that of Paolo Di Paolo, who introduces the speakers, engages in dialogue with them, and accompanies the audience through each story with curiosity and sensitivity.
From its Roman origins, the project has expanded to more than thirty Italian cities and many international venues, involving over two hundred speakers. In twenty years of activity, Lezioni di Storia has experimented with new languages and formats — blending history with music and theatre, reaching audiences through streaming, podcasts, and even a TikTok channel that brings history to younger generations.
