Giornate Europee del Patrimonio - GEP 2025 (European Heritage Days)

Giornate Europee del Patrimonio - GEP 2025

Promoted by the Council of Europe and the European Commission since 1991 to enhance shared cultural heritage and encourage active participation in its preservation, European Heritage Days (in Italy, Giornate Europee del Patrimonio - GEPs) are one of the most participated cultural events at the European level.

In Italy, the event is coordinated by the Ministry of Culture. The 2025 theme “Architetture: l’arte di costruire” takes up the European slogan “Heritage and Architecture: Windows to the Past, Doors to the Future”, chosen by the Council of Europe and shared by the states participating in the Days. It is an invitation to reflect on the cultural value of the built landscape that surrounds us, rediscovering architecture as a living expression of history.

To promote Italian cultural heritage, the two days of September 27 and 28 are dedicated to meetings, events, guided tours and workshops in museums and public and private cultural sites throughout the country. The list of initiatives organized in state-owned cultural sites, with schedules and all the information on how to participate, are available on the Ministry of Culture website. Extraordinary openings of some national museums at the symbolic cost of 1 euro are also planned for the evening of Saturday. Among the special places that can be visited in Rome on the last weekend of September is the Monumental Complex of San Michele, home to the General Directorate of Museums and Italian Museums, which will also be open exceptionally on Saturday evening.

As in previous editions, the Capitoline Superintendency is participating in European Heritage Days with an extensive program of visits, itineraries and educational initiatives in museums managed by Roma Capitale (e.g. the Capitoline Museums and the Museum of Rome) and throughout the city (Porta San Paolo, Bastione Ardeatino, Porta del Popolo, Museo del Teatro Argentina). Some visits are supplemented with Italian sign language translation. The complete program is available on the official website.

The fourth edition of the YEHM - Giovani protagonisti del patrimonio culturale europeo competition (for children and young people aged 6 to 17) is also linked to GEP 2025.
