The cycle of events, spread over five weekends dedicated to the discovery of the historical, artistic, monumental, cultural and literary treasures kept inside the Verano Monumental Cemetery, is renewed.
The event, designed and organized by AMA Cimiteri Capitolini in coordination with Roma Capitale, begins on Saturday, May 17 and ends on Sunday, June 15, and is dedicated to Romans, tourists and pilgrims arriving in Rome for the Jubilee. The rich and varied spring program that includes free themed cultural visits, carried out on foot and each lasting about 2 hours, has a total of 44 events spread over 11 days - every Saturday, Sunday and holiday of the period - with the help of specialized and "audio-assisted" guides with disposable microphones and headphones.
Among this year's new features, we would like to highlight a special itinerary inspired by the current Holy Year, entitled "The Jubilee of Hope at Verano: from the Basilica outside the Walls to the Church of Mercy" (scheduled for May 24, June 7 and 14 at 9:30), which also stops at two churches: the nearby Basilica of San Lorenzo, where Pope Pius IX is buried, and the lesser-known church inside the cemetery, which is opened for the occasion and will host the choral quartet DoUtRe, with sacred music performed live.
Another special event is the “Urban Trekking: nature, history and landscape at the monumental cemetery of Verano”: an exciting walk in the greenery, where nature, landscape, art and history of the cemetery intertwine, to discover the most important and centuries-old botanical species, led by a technician from the Department of Environmental Protection of Rome Capital and an art historian.
The “leitmotif” of the calendar of events is finally “Gardens of 80”, peace 80 years after the end of the Second World War, a theme to which the “Week of European Historic Cemeteries” (23 May – 1 June) proposed by the ASCE (Association of Significant Cemeteries in Europe) is dedicated, to which AMA Cimiteri Capitolini adheres, with some scheduled itineraries that include stories of women and men who have dedicated themselves to justice and peace.
Information on the program of events/visits/itineraries and related reservations (mandatory) are available and can be consulted on the website www.cimitericapitolini.it/eventi-e-cultura/610-programma-primavera-2025.html. All events are free.
