From 18 to 24 October, as part of the 2024-2025 season of the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, the Teatro Nazionale presents a diptych that, in a new production, brings together the works of two extraordinary 20th-century composers: Leoš Janácek and Francis Poulenc.
The event, directed by Andrea Bernard, winner of the 2024 Abbiati Prize, features The Diary of One Who Disappeared, composed by Janáček between 1917 and 1919 to a libretto by Josef Kalda, and La voix humaine (The Human Voice), created by Poulenc in 1958 and inspired by Jean Cocteau's play of the same name.
On stage are tenor Matthias Koziorowski and mezzo-soprano Veronica Simeoni, protagonists of Janáček's opera, and Anna Caterina Antonacci, performing the role of the woman in La voix humaine, with sets by Alberto Beltrame, costumes by Elena Beccaro and light design by Marco Alba.
The music for both acts, performed in a piano version, is entrusted to the refined pianist Donald Sulzen, a member of the famous Munich Piano Trio.
